Abstract

he present article seeks to discuss the historicity, phenomenology and meanings of Orientalism in European architecture of the 19th century. Seeking to observe its manifestations and languages ​​in the built material culture, as social productions marked by tensions inherent in architectural language that is fundamentally parlante and that of representation of the 'other'. We intend to contribute to a debate that observes Orientalism in architecture, above all, as an authority of knowledge and symbolic praxis, of distinction and affirmation of Europe - and the West. Materialized as knowledge, which from the categorizing and edifying looks of its architects, were - by art - capable of conceiving a captive Orient, to be displayed in the streets of European cities, in the pantheon of their triumphs, as architectures recognizable.
