Abstract

This work’s proposal is to discuss the governor of Rio de Janeiro Salvador Correia de Sá’s displaying of loyalty to the Portuguese monarch who ascended to the throne in the aftermath of the Restoration of 1640. Starting from a discussion towards the fragmented Portuguese political environment after the end of the Iberian Union (1580-1640), this article will seek to discuss, through an account of d. João IV’s acclamation in Rio de Janeiro, the importance of reporting individual merits in a regime-changing moment in Portugal.
