This article examines the impact of the Great Depression in Portugal in the context of political transition between the Military Dictatorship and the Estado Novo. Specifically, our object of study is the rural unemployment. We aim to point out the phenomenon to try to understand more fully the circumstances in which it occurred, its social consequences as well the exogenous dynamics and governance and institutional arrangements in the period under analysis.
