Abstract

Getúlio Vargas took office as president of the republic for the second time in 1951, assuming a democratic government. However, his new government was marked by great political instability, due to strong opposition from the National Democratic Union (UDN) and from the press. In this sense, the purpose of this work is to verify the power of the press in the historical field, highlighting its influence in the construction of political events. This understanding will be made here, through the analysis of the Tribuna da Imprensa and Última Hora newspapers, during the crisis presented in the second Getúlio Vargas government, trying to understand how the interests defended by them influenced the political course at that time, which had the troubled ending, with the suicide of the president on August 24, 1954.
