Building a new urban space during Estado Novo:

the participation of carioca’s contractors in the works of Henrique Dodsworth's management (1937-1945)

Abstract

The cariocas’ companies of building sector during the period in which last the Estado Novo are the subject of study of this paper. We will examine the phases of development of that sector in this period and the most important policies of the administration of the Mayor Henrique Dodsworth for this section. Afterward we will go over the set of enterprises that were hire by the Secretaria Geral de Viação e Obras in order to make the infrastructure works in the city. With the contracts published in the Boletins da Prefeitura do Distrito Federal as a base document, we will investigate the amount invested into the implementation of the municipal program of public works during each year and the division of the whole income between the enterprises.
