Abstract

The Press as an active social force is a valuable source of documentation for the writing of History. Starting from the assumption that newspapers are inxhaustive sources for the study of Brazilian History, this paper aims at analyzing the state elections in 1896 through the content of the Federal Official Gazette of Brazil. Besides having publications on the official acts of the government, the Gazette contributes to the understanding of other aspects of Sergipe society, particularly the political ones. Thus, it is visible the way the Federal Official Gazette of Brazil influenced public opinion within the Sergipe society favoring the Oligarchical State, which was in the process of consolidation during this period.
