Abstract

Contemporary analysis holds that the German ideology is ruling the Eurozone. The ideology is German ordoliberalism. In these analyzes, European public policy is dictated by the ordoliberal preferences for fiscal austerity. Distinctly, the identification of ordoliberalism with austerity is far from limiting support for an ordoliberal idea in Europe. The roles focused on the ordoliberal understanding are in the relationship between State and society and between free economy and mass democracy. This introduces Carl Schmitt's political theology as a theoretical context, traces the ordoliberal argument to restrain democratic rule, presents the European decision-making structure, and concludes the possible meanings of democracy in an ordoliberal Europe.
