Abstract

This article proposes a comparative analysis of the speeches given by Presidents General Emílio Garrastazu Medici of Brazil and General Jorge Rafael Videla of Argentina during the FIFA World Cups in 1970 and 1978. The objective is to analyze how the presidential speeches used the sporting successes of the national teams - in 1970, in the case of Brazil and in 1978 in Argentina - to strengthen certain national projects represented by the civil-military regimes of each country.
