Abstract

O Homem Social was an essentially political newspaper published in Mariana (MG) between 1832 and 1833. Its editor was the liberal priest Antonio José Ribeiro Bhering, teacher and political, recognized by his willingness for the liberal pedagogy and performance in the periodical press. His writings reflects the battles in favor of the liberalism, freedom of the press and the constitution of a public sphere. Reflects, also, the different articulations established in the field of politics and civil society, as well as the anxieties regarding the issues faced in the province of Minas Gerais and in the Empire. Seem to seek both a way of analyzing local and provincial politics, responding to voters and fostering public opinion, but also a way of integrating debates within national policy. Analyze the writings of this newspaper is a way to bring some contribution to the understanding of the different facets and variants of the practices and principles of liberalism in Brazil, as well as the forms that these newspapers, scattered throughout the Empire, participated in the national political game.
