Abstract

Catholicism in the early centuries of formation of Brazilian society, took a mandatory character. The situation of the clergy in colonial Brazil was something drastic, starting with the lack of priestly vocation and the qualification of these "professionals". Blaspheme was anintegral part of the culture of most Christians, an act of everyday life, such a common act that even the clergy could not escape. Despite the clergy not be immune to the environment considered heretic that circulated, it was not enough to explain his moral profligacy when they should serve as an example. The discredit of the church might be further fanned by the considerable number of priests known by the poor live. The speech guarantee the reality of thought, that's what the Inquisition saw all that was said by proponents and blasphemers. They understand speech as an extension of thought and presentation of internal convictions.
