MELANCHOLIC ASPECTS IN POESIA EM PÂNICO, BY MURILO MENDES

Abstract

The present work analyzes the book A poesia em pânico (1937), by Murilo Mendes, under the prism of melancholy. Such a proposal is relevant not only for bringing an innovative perspective on the poet's work, but for showing, from selected texts, how the transgression of the lyrical self is, in part, linked to the melancholic feeling. In this sense, even in poems in which there is the apparent abandonment of religiosity, marked by erotic traits, there are, underlying, aspects inherent to melancholy, such as the fear of divine punishment. The research, of bibliographic and qualitative nature, is developed through the analysis of poems of the book in question, taking as theoretical references the studies on melancholy, carried out by Jean Starobinski (2016), Costa Lima (2017), Sigmund Freud (2010a) and Sigmund Freud (2010b). Thus, this article shows how melancholy crosses Murilo Mendes' poetry, revealing deep layers of his lyrical and thematic construction.
