Abstract

At the intersection between Mythology, Literature and Psychoanalysis, this article analyzes the Feminism that emerges from the myth of Medusa and its evolution since Antiquity. The aim is to discuss Medusa, allowing it to be read as a metaphor for modern women in the struggle for appreciation and respect for their differences. Through feminist literary criticism, this study proposes possible approaches for reading Medusa in the works of Clarice Lispector, under the insightful lens of Lucia Helena, Hélène Cixous, and Antoinette Fouque, as well as the reminiscences of Virginia Woolf that echo between Literature and Psychoanalysis. Freud's centennial text, “The Head of Medusa” (1922), counterpoints Psychoanalysis to understand the symbology that arises from the appropriation of myth and the concept of symbolic castration that was rejected by Hélène Cixous's reflection, in order to allow a less tragic and happier Medusa in Literature and in everyday life.

Professora Associada da Faculdade de Letras, da Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora (UFJF) (2012 -). Doutora (1999) e Mestre (1993) em Letras: Teoria da Literatura, pela Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho (UNESP) - São José do Rio Preto, SP. Graduada em Letras: Inglês e Literaturas (1988) pela Universidade Estadual de Maringá, PR (UEM). Líder do Grupo de Pesquisa "Travessias e Feminismo(s): estudos identitários de autoria feminina" (CNPq) e pesquisadora do Grupo de Pesquisa KEW - Kyklos de Estudos Woolfianos. Membro da ABRALIC (Associação Brasileira de Literatura Comparada), ACLA (Associação Americana de Literatura Comparada) e International Virginia Woolf Society (IVWS).
