This 1989 essay by Professor Michael R. HILL originally graced the sesquicentennial edition of How to Observe Morals and Manners (1838) by the Englishwoman sociologist Harriet MARTINEAU (1802–1876). Michael R. HILL’s essay is offered here today in Spanish with annotations and minor corrections not only because, historically, it launched much of the subsequent sociological interest in Harriet MARTINEAU, but also because it continues to be an insightful introduction to Harriet MARTINEAU’s foundational text, the first full-fledged methods book in the social sciences. Michael R. HILL excavates and articulates the methodological and epistemological issues of the “Science of Morals,” the name Harriet MARTINEAU gave to what we now call sociology. How to Observe Morals and Manners, together with other sociological works by Harriet MARTINEAU noted in HILL’s essay, clearly identify her as a reflexive and critical writer. Due in considerable part to Michael R. HILL’s previous and ongoing scholarship, Harriet MARTINEAU can now be recognized, without doubt, as a major intellectual founder of disciplinary sociology
