Este ensaio de 1989 do professor Michael R. HILL apareceu originalmente na edição sesquicentenária de How to Observe Morals and Manners (1838) [Como observar: morais e costumes], uma obra escrita pela socióloga inglesa Harriet MARTINEAU (1802-1876). O ensaio de Michael R. HILL é oferecido aqui hoje em inglês com pequenas anotações e correções não só porque, historicamente, despertou muito do interesse sociológico subsequente em Harriet MARTINEAU, mas também porque continua a ser uma introdução perspicaz ao texto fundador de Harriet MARTINEAU, o primeiro livro de métodos abrangentes nas ciências sociais. Michael R. HILL escava e articula as questões metodológicas e epistemológicas da "Ciência da Moral", o nome que Harriet MARTINEAU deu ao que hoje chamamos sociologia.
