Introduction: Schizophrenia is considered the main form of psychosis due to its frequency and clinical relevance, causing socio-functional impairments and burdens for families. Objective: To analyze, from the perspective of patients with schizophrenia and their family members, access to healthcare within the Psychosocial Care Network (RAPS) services in a municipality in the countryside of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Methodology: This is a descriptive, qualitative study. The population consisted of patients with schizophrenia and their family members enrolled in Family Health Strategy teams supported by the Multiprofessional Residency Program in Family and Community Health at the State University of Montes Claros. The intentional sample was defined by theoretical saturation. Data collected through semi-structured interviews were analyzed using Thematic Content Analysis. Results and Conclusion: Eighteen participants were interviewed. Three units of analysis emerged: The meaning of living with mental health needs: perspectives of patients and family members; Challenges of mental health care in the RAPS; and Perceptions of patients and family members/caregivers regarding mental health care. Both positive and negative feelings were highlighted, along with the difficulties of living with mental illness. Factors related to difficulties in accessing care services—such as medication management, intersectoral collaboration, and limited access to professionals—were identified as challenges in care. Most participants acknowledged that professional support and family involvement were fundamental to coping with the challenges associated with schizophrenia.
