Abstract

The study aimed to identify the nursery professional actuation, auxiliary and techniques, from two asylums located at <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Montes Claros - Minas Gerais state, referred to care of oral health of institutionalized elders. This research was quantitative, descriptive and cross-sectioned. For this purpose, it was applied an instrument of data collection to all (24) nursery professionals working at São Vicente de Paula Asylum and Associação das Damas de Caridade. The statistical treatment involved frequencies and variables association (p<0.05). The majority of these professionals are female, with 30 or more years-old, with 12 or more years of scholarship, and time of working experience up to five years.  62.5% of the interviewed works during the day in an exclusive institution. All of them related to take care daily of the 10 or more elders and 62.5% received instructions about oral health and removable prosthesis hygiene during their graduations. Many professionals considered this activity of the nursery scope (95.8%), but only 45.8% performed it on elders. A half of the interviewed reported that received leader orientations to perform the oral health procedures. The oral care and prosthesis hygiene were more associated with male gender (p<0.05) when all of males referred to perform these procedures instead the majority of females did not realized. It is possible to conclude that the extensive load of work, exceeding number of elders and  absence of standard protocols to oral care to nursery team contribute to absence of oral care procedures.    <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
