5th ISA Forum of Sociology

Take this unique opportunity to discuss and contribute to the reflections on the challenges and transformations in contemporary tourism! The session "Tourism, Cities, and Global Change", organized by RC50 International Tourism, invites the submission of papers that explore the complexity and the social, cultural, and environmental impacts of tourism in the globalized world.

Session Title: Tourism, Cities, and Global Change

Format: Oral Session

Tourism, as one of the main expressions of contemporary society, embodies various paradoxes. It symbolizes freedom, creativity, inclusion in global processes, and a tool for constructing identities. At the same time, it also represents exploitation, exclusion, loss of identity, and perpetuation of cultural stereotypes and social inequalities.

The rapid recovery of tourism after the pandemic, which seemed like a pivotal moment for transformation, has proven to be less impactful than expected. Critical issues such as overtourism and its consequences—gentrification, housing crises, touristification, and more—remain deeply entrenched, transforming urban life and fueling anti-tourism sentiment.

We welcome submissions on topics such as:

Tourism and Globalization, Cultural Change
Crisis, Recovery, Creativity, and Resilience
Environmental and Socio-Cultural Sustainability
Impacts of Overtourism on Urban Culture and Social Life
Sustainable Practices and Urban Planning to Address Overtourism

Anti-Tourism Behavior
Cosmopolitanism and Democracy
Coexistence of National and International Experiences in the Same Time and Space

This session will provide an opportunity to discuss these critical issues, encouraging reflections and solutions that influence public policies and sustainable practices in tourism.
