Brazil has high biodiversity that is threatened by animal trafficking and, mainly, by the lack of knowledge and awareness of the population. Thus, as the studies of this nature are still scarce, the objective was to evaluate the knowledge of the population of Iporá about the Law of Environmental Crimes and the activity of trade and illegal creation or maintenance of wildlife. Data were collected using semi-structured questionnaires that presented 36 open and closed questions. After interviewing 180 people in 18 neighborhoods, the current study, revealed information on environmental crimes and data on environmental awareness, which had not been described for Iporá (GO) until then. The population does not have an adequate level of knowledge of normative environmental norms. Illegal consumption and trade in fish, trafficking in birds and reptiles, breeding of wild animals in captivity and consumption of game meat were reported in the city. It is necessary that new studies on the trafficking of wild animals be carried out not only in Iporá, but throughout the western region of Goiás State.
