Abstract

This article analyzes the ways in which Petra Costa approaches dictatorship and the family in The Edge of Democracy. Throughout the essay, the film is situated within Petra's filmography, in the Latin American subjective turn, and is related to other works that address the same event. We seek to outline the narrative and aesthetic strategies operated by the direct-to-trace points of permanence between the coups of 1964 and 2016. In detail, we scrutinize the passages in which Petra enunciatively recalls her family history, placing these memories within their narrative and problematizing some of their choices.
