Abstract

This essay explores the connections between travel, modernity, melodrama, and visual regimes through an analysis of the feature film Inferninho (Guto Parente and Pedro Diógenes, 2018). By examining the spatial and temporal construction of the film's narrative and identifying three of its most emblematic moments that feature the culture of travel and the world's unraveling, I aim to shed light on the film's overall sensibility. Additionally, I discuss how the film expresses the themes of longing for love, feelings of enclosure, and the desire for mobility as central aspects of the melodramatic imagination in cinema.
