Abstract

In this article, we discuss the way in which lesbian love in Céline Sciamma's film Portrait of a lady on fire (2019) is instituted by a game of gazes between the protagonists, which is constructed and revealed as painting and cinema, placed in relation within the film itself, configure and reveal themselves as producing devices of gaze. We question to what extent the eroticism, constructed in the gazes exchanged between the painter and the model, leads to a balance in the relationship between women that subverts binary and asymmetrical logics - such as who paints and who is the model, of those who look and who are looked at, of those who are passive and active. It is about thinking, through these passages, the field of the arts crossed by politics and feminism conceived in its aesthetic dimension.
