Abstract

This article examines female leadership in the emergence of cell churches, focusing on the influence of Pastor Choi Ja-shil on David Yonggi Cho, whose leadership is often praised in isolation. Set in South Korea in the 1960s, the study shows how, in the face of men’s refusal to lead cell groups, Choi took the initiative, opening space for an inclusive, decentralized, and innovative ecclesiastical model. Her role was decisive in shaping Yoido Full Gospel Church, regarded as the pioneer of the modern cell system. The research also engages with studies on the sixteenth-century Protestant Reformation, drawing parallels with the historical invisibility of women in religious contexts. Through an interdisciplinary approach and the analysis of historical sources, biographies, and studies on cell churches, the article shows how women’s participation was fundamental to the genesis of this movement.
