The importance of religion in the context of palliative care

Abstract

It is an exploratory and bibliographical research, with a qualitative approach and historical method, the result of a doctoral study with the objective of analyzing the relationship of patients under palliative care and their families with religion. In January 2017 and January 2018, 8 patients and 3 family members of patients admitted to a hospital in the city of São Paulo specialized in palliative care were interviewed. A semi-structured script was used with questions about the religious experience before and after the illness. The results were 8 (72.72%) were Catholic, 2 (18.18%) were spiritists and 1 (9.09%) were atheist. Most (54.54%) sought help within their own religion, however, 2 (36.36%) said they accepted help from any religion. Confirming the hypothesis that showed that (81.81%) seek support in religion when facing death.

Author Biographies

Isabel Cristina Bueno Palumbo, Cruzeiro do Sul University

She holds a degree in Nursing from the Centro Universitário Herminio Ometto de Araras (1990), a Master’s in Bioethics from the Centro Universitário São Camilo (2010) and a PhD in Science of Religion from the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (2018). Specialist in Emergency and Assistance Management by UNIFESP and Stomatherapy by Faculdade Cleber Leite. Qualified in ozone therapy affiliated with ABOZ. Training in clinical podiatry, laser therapy and injectables. She is currently an adjunct professor II at the Cruzeiro do Sul University. He teaches semiology, semiotechnics, fundamentals of nursing, bioethics and child health.

Carlos Antônio Braga de Souza, Federal University of Pará

Graduated in Artistic Education/Plastic Arts (1991) from the Federal University of Pará (UFPA). On the occasion, he defended the TCC "The Smile in Art". `Has a master's degree in Communication and Multimedia from Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP/Bauru - 2001) with the theme "The Virgin Mary in Renaissance Painting as a Re-signification of the Great Paleolithic Mother". In 2017, he defended his doctoral thesis at the Pontifical Catholic University (PUC/SP) "Each birth of an intersexual child is a slap in the face of society: a reflection on religion and gender in Brazilian society". Since 1995 he teaches at UFPA, being linked to the Institute of Applied Social Sciences (ICSA), where he teaches Brazilian Art, Brazilian Culture and Ethics in Communication. Currently, she researches the relationship between peripheral sexualities, art and religion.

José Augusto Oliveira Dias

Master in Sciences of Religion from the State University of Pará-UEPA. Graduated in Full Licentiate in Sciences of Religion from the University of the State of Pará. Researcher of phenomena in the Human Areas. Belonging to the Research Group on Evangelical Movements, Institutions and Cultures in the Amazon - MICEA - UEPA and to the Research and Extension Group in Art, Gender, Information and Religion - AGIR - UFPA.

Leandro de Sousa Rocha, Universidade Federal do Pará

Student of Librarianship at the Federal University of Pará - UFPA (Starting in 2020) and Administration by the Leonardo da Vinci Educational Association UNIASSELVI (Starting in 2021). He is a Researcher in the Project The Faces of the Goddess: a study on the symbolism of the Goddess in contemporary Amazonia and develops Extension activities in the Research and Extension Group in Art, Gender, Information and Religion - AGIR/FABIB/ICSA/UFPA.
