Abstract

This article presents a scenario of musical education in the city of Rio de Janeiro at the end of the 19th century, based on a research carried out through editions of Jornal do Commercio in 1891 and the Almanak Laemmert published in the same year. The research was based on the announcements of private music classes, music institutions or regular schools, aiming to contribute to the understanding of the situation of music education in the capital of Brazil in this period and to present a survey of the offers of classes, the musical instruments studied, schools and active teachers.
