Right-wing trans? Identity markers and political spectrum on TikTok

Abstract

This article investigates the impact of social networks on Brazilian politics, with an emphasis on the work of Suellen Rayanne, a digital influencer and conservative trans woman with a strong presence on TikTok. Suellen defies stereotypes by aligning her trans identity with Bolsonarist values, creating a unique political figure, especially in a context where trans figures are generally associated with left-wing and progressive guidelines. The research carries out a qualitative analysis of Suellen's posts, seeking to understand how her digital activities expose the contradictions of the conservative field and the challenges faced by LGBTQIAPN+ individuals who identify with this ideological aspect. Furthermore, the study compares Suellen's trajectory to that of other trans figures in Brazilian politics, such as Erika Hilton and Thammy Miranda, highlighting the different political strategies adopted by these leaders on opposite ideological spectrums. By analyzing the case of Suellen Rayanne, this study contributes to the understanding of the dynamics between social and political networks in contemporary Brazil, offering a critical reflection on the challenges, opportunities, internal integration and the complexities of LGBTQIAPN+ representation in a polarized and constantly transforming.
