Resumen

This article deals with the process of professionalism, distinction and specific knowledge acquired by merchant groups in the Luso-Brazilian Empire after the Pombal Age. This process is linked to the tradesmen's social rise and the recognition of this group by state. The differences among merchant groups are showed in this article.
