Bishops and Laymen: catholic reform and Brotherhoods in Imperial Rio de Janeiro

Resumen

This article is intended as a brief reflection on the conflicts between laymen and the ecclesiastical hierarchy, in Rio de Janeiro, in the second half of the 19th century. The objective is, through this reflection, to understand the complexity of the relations among Church, State and society in the Second Reign.
