Abstract

This article's central objective is to bring to the table the role of Amazonas in the national political landscape in the early years of the Brazilian republic. To this end, the 1890-1891 constitutional debates will be analyzed, with an emphasis on the role of the constituents representing Amazonas in drafting the first Constitution of the Republic. Through the content of the debates, the article will seek to identify the interests of these constituents for Amazonas, highlighting their profiles and the local political landscape. In addition to the constitutional debates, newspapers of the time and specialized bibliography were used, allowing us to observe that one of the constituents' greatest concerns was ensuring the financial independence of the state of Amazonas.
