Abstract
The article focuses on the construction and diffusion of certain images of the Jesuit missionary José de Anchieta by religious men, historians and public men, highlighting the relation between the exaltation of his conduct as a precursor of Brazilian nationality, guardian of morals and example of sanctity, and the process of his beatification and canonization, started soon after his death in 1597.
