Bishops and Laymen: catholic reform and Brotherhoods in Imperial Rio de Janeiro

Abstract

This article is intended as a brief reflection on the conflicts between laymen and the ecclesiastical hierarchy, in Rio de Janeiro, in the second half of the 19° century. The objective is, through this reflection, to understand the complexity of the relations among Church, State and society in the Second Reign.
