Abstract

This article focuses on the spread of literacy in modern times, a process that was accompanied by a strengthening of the concept of individuality. Those who learned how to read wanted to be alone and practiced a form of solitary reflection which was possible even in the presence of others. The evolution of the modern individual occurred in part because of this new way of reading, silent reading.
