Resumo
O artigo discute de que maneira os ataques de 11 de setembro representam um importante ponto de inflexão na história do movimento conservador norte-americano. A direita americana, que encontrara nos anos 1960 e 1970 pontos de convergência entre suas diferentes correntes, passa a se fragmentar com o fortalecimento dos neoconservadores nos anos 1980. O artigo procura analisar como esse processo, que se ensaiava antes do fim da Guerra Fria, foi acelerado pela resposta de George W. Bush aos ataques terroristas e permitiu que forças políticas como o populismo se deslocassem das margens para o centro do debate político.
