Abstract

Introduction: There is a vast literature that relates racial inequality to disparities in health outcomes, revealing that this is an important predictor of health status. Understanding racial differences in the patterns of access to health services is essential for planning actions and adapting services to the social reality of the population. Objective: Identify the influence of race on the lack of access to dental services by university students from a higher education institution in the municipality Juiz de Fora (MG). Material and Methods: A cross-sectional study, of the census type, was carried out in the format of a web survey. The outcome was the lack of access to dental services. Independent variables were selected based on a theoretical model adapted from Andersen and Davidson for the present study. Bivariate analyzes and robust Poisson regression with 95% confidence intervals were performed. Results: A total of 1848 students from the Federal University of Juiz de Fora participated in the study. The prevalence of lack of access among blacks and browns was 9.8% and among whites and yellows, 5.6%. The results revealed racial disparities in the lack of access to dental services, which were explained by issues related to the oral health service and by individual characteristics of predisposition, enabling and need. Conclusion: It is concluded that, in order to neutralize the sources of injustice inside the field of oral health, it is necessary to improve and strengthen public policies that are based on the principles of universality and equity and and recognize the role of race and other social markers in oral health outcomes.
