Introduction: Newborns (NB) are vulnerable to several risk factors at birth, and the main causes of neonatal death are prematurity, low birth weight and congenital sepsis. Research on the characteristics and health profile of newborns hospitalized in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in the east of the state of Minas Gerais is still poorly documented. The knowledge and analysis of these characteristics may enable future research projects and planning of health actions that can improve the neonatal care provided. Objectives: To describe and analyze the maternal characteristics, birth, and period of hospitalization of newborns hospitalized in the NICU in the east of the state of Minas Gerais. Methods: A descriptive study with analysis of medical records of NBs admitted and hospitalized in the NICU of a public hospital in Governador Valadares, Minas Gerais, with data recording using a standardized form. Data were analyzed using descriptive measures. Results: It was observed that 66.1% of deliveries were cesarean and 56.1% of women were married; 63.7% of the newborns had a diagnosis of prematurity and respiratory distress, 56.9% were male, with a median gestational age of 35 weeks (23-42, min-max); 61.5% had adequate weight for gestational age; 77.9% of the NB used non-invasive ventilation (NIV), 81.4% were discharged. Conclusion: Most mothers whose newborns were hospitalized in the NICU were married and the most common type of delivery was cesarean. The NBs were characterized as being primarily male, with adequate birth weight, with the most common hospitalization diagnosis of prematurity and respiratory distress. Most newborns required NIV support. Knowledge of these characteristics can provide the development of future research, and improvements in the management and evaluation of health actions to improve the quality of health care provided in the perinatal and neonatal period.
