Abstract

The siege of Piombino in 1448 represents a unique episode in the history of war and politics in fifteenth-century Italian peninsula. Situated between the expansionist ambitions of the Crown of Aragon and the defensive interests of Florence, the resistance of the city, governed by Caterina Appiani, involved diplomatic maneuvers, the hiring of condottieri, and the use of innovative military tactics and technologies. This article examines the political context preceding the siege, the diplomatic mechanisms employed, the offensive and defensive strategies used, the main actors involved — including Alfonso V of Aragon, Federico da Montefeltro, and Sigismondo Malatesta — and the consequences of the conflict for the balance of power in the Italian peninsula. Based on primary sources and specialized literature, this study offers an integrated analysis of warfare, diplomacy, and the material culture of late medieval conflict.
