Instructions to Authors

During the submission process to the Journal of Nursing at UFJF, it is clear that manuscripts must adhere to the author's instructions, as well as international guidelines for presenting clinical research results for each study type, following the recommendations of the Enhancing the Quality and Transparency Of health Research (EQUATOR) Network (http://www.equator-network.org/) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).

The necessary requirements for submitting manuscripts for publication in this journal are based on the "Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals," known as the "Vancouver" style, of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors and other standardizing documents for publications.

The Journal of Nursing at UFJF adheres to the Code of Conduct of Best Practices Guidelines for Journal Editors by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) (http://publicationethics.org/) or http://goo.gl/aWy7WX, as well as the guidelines of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) (http://www.icmje.org) and the Singapore Statement on Research Integrity https://wcrif.org/guidance/singapore-statement. It also supports the World Health Organization's Clinical Trials Policy and Good Clinical Practice, and the Declaration of Helsinki (1964, revised in 1975, 1983, 1989, 1996, 2000, 2008, and 2013), in addition to compliance with national research regulations.

For clinical research articles, it is recommended to provide the Universal Trial Number (UTIN) in one of the Clinical Trials records established by the World Health Organization and ICMJE.

We recommend using international guidelines for presenting research results, according to PAHO and EQUATOR:

  • Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial – CONSORT
  • Observational Studies – STROBE
  • Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses – PRISMA or MOOSE
  • Study Protocols – SPIRIT or PRISMA-P
  • Case Reports – CARE
  • Clinical Practice Guidelines/Protocols – AGREE or RIGHT
  • Qualitative Studies – COREQ (checklist) or SRQR
  • Pre-clinical Animal Studies – ARRIVE

Ethics in Publication: Ethics in publication and declaration of publication negligence are primarily based on the Code of Conduct and Guidelines for Best Practices for Journal Editors (Committee on Publication Ethics - COPE. Link: http://publicationethics.org/files/Code_of_conduct_for_journal_editors_Mar11.pdf).

According to COPE, the duties and responsibilities are:

Editors:

  1. Publication decisions: The editor is responsible for deciding which submitted articles will be published. The editor will evaluate manuscripts without considering the authors' race, gender, sexual orientation, religious belief, ethnic origin, citizenship, or political philosophy. The decision will be based on the importance, originality, and clarity of the article, as well as the validity of the study and its relevance to the journal's scope. Current legal requirements regarding defamation, copyright infringement, and plagiarism are also considered.
  2. Confidentiality: The editor and any editorial staff must not disclose any information about a submitted manuscript to anyone other than the corresponding author or, as appropriate, to reviewers, potential reviewers, other editorial consultants, and the editor.
  3. Disclosure and conflicts of interest: Unpublished materials disclosed in a submitted article will not be used by the editor or editorial board members for their own research purposes without the explicit written consent of the author.
  4. Recognition of sources: Editors should use appropriate software to identify cases where relevant published work referred to in the article is not cited in the reference section. The results of the software analysis should indicate whether observations or arguments derived from other publications are accompanied by the respective source. Editors will notify the author of any similarity or substantial overlap between the manuscript under consideration and any other published article of which they are aware.

Reviewers:

  1. Contribution to editorial decisions: The peer-review process assists the editor and the editorial board in making editorial decisions and also serves the author in improving the manuscript.
  2. Promptness: Any selected reviewer who feels unqualified to review the research reported in a manuscript or knows that immediate review will be impossible should notify the editor and withdraw from the review process.
  3. Confidentiality: All manuscripts received for review must be treated as confidential documents. They must not be disclosed or discussed with others, except as authorized by the editor.
  4. Objectivity standards: Reviews must be conducted objectively. Personal criticism of the author is inappropriate. Reviewers must express their opinions clearly with supporting arguments.
  5. Recognition of sources: Reviewers must identify cases where relevant published work referred to in the article is not cited in the reference section. They must indicate whether observations or arguments derived from other publications are accompanied by the respective source. Reviewers will notify the editor of any similarity or substantial overlap between the manuscript under consideration and any other published article of which they have personal knowledge.
  6. Disclosure and conflict of interest: Information or privileged ideas obtained through peer review must be kept confidential and must not be used for personal advantage. Reviewers must not consider manuscripts in which they have conflicts of interest resulting from competitive, collaborative, or other relationships with other authors, companies, or institutions associated with the work.

Authors:

  1. Manuscript standards: Authors of original research manuscripts must present an accurate account of the work performed, as well as an objective discussion of its significance. Underlying data must be accurately represented in the article. An article must contain sufficient details and references to enable others to replicate the work. Fraudulent or knowingly inaccurate statements constitute unethical behavior and are unacceptable.
  2. Data access and retention: Authors may be asked to provide raw data from their studies along with the article for editorial review and must be prepared to make the data publicly available if possible. In any case, authors must ensure the accessibility of this data to other competent professionals for at least ten years after publication (preferably through an institutional data repository or other data center), provided the confidentiality of participants can be protected, and legal rights related to information ownership do not prevent its disclosure.
  3. Originality, plagiarism, and source recognition: Authors will submit only entirely original works and will appropriately cite the work and/or words of others. Publications that have influenced the nature of the reported work must also be cited.
  4. Multiple, redundant, or simultaneous publications: In general, articles that essentially describe the same research should not be published in more than one journal. Submitting the same work to more than one journal constitutes unethical publication behavior and is unacceptable. Additionally, the Journal of Nursing at UFJF allows up to 3 (three) manuscript submissions per author, per publication volume. Authors may only use the same results in other publications by clearly indicating this journal as the means of original publication. As we are an open-access journal, the free use of articles in educational and scientific applications is allowed, provided the source is cited in accordance with the CC-BY license of Creative Commons.
  5. Authorship of the article: Authorship should be limited to those who have made a significant contribution to the conception, design, execution, or interpretation of the reported study. All those who have made significant contributions must be listed as co-authors. The corresponding author ensures that all contributing co-authors and no uninvolved person are included in the author list. The corresponding author will also verify that all co-authors have approved the final version of the article and agreed to its submission for publication.
  6. Disclosure and conflicts of interest: All authors must include a statement disclosing any financial or other conflict of interest that may be interpreted as influencing the results or interpretation of their manuscript. All sources of financial support for the project must be disclosed.
  7. Fundamental errors in published works: When an author discovers a significant error or inaccuracy in their own published work, it is the author's obligation to immediately notify the journal editor and cooperate with the editor to withdraw or correct the article in the form of an erratum. The need for an erratum should be communicated via email (revista.enfufjf@ufjf.edu.br) to the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Nursing at UFJF, explicitly stating the error in the already published article, within a maximum of 30 days. Special attention is given to PROOFREADING to avoid errata. Errata can also be published at the end of articles, following the guidance of international databases, preserving the original record of the manuscript and providing information about any necessary corrections.
