Ethics and malpractice statement

The Journal of Nursing of UFJF (Revista de Enfermagem da UFJF) follows the best practice guidelines on ethics and publication misconduct set by the Committee on Publication Ethics and the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), as stated on the DOAJ pages under Transparency and Best Practices. The ethics in publishing and the declaration of publication misconduct are primarily based on the Code of Conduct and Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE):  (http://publicationethics.org/files/Code_of_conduct_for_journal_editors_Mar11.pdf).

In accordance with COPE, the following duties and responsibilities apply:

Editors:

Publication Decisions
The editor is responsible for deciding which of the submitted articles will be published. The editor evaluates manuscripts without regard to the authors' race, gender, sexual orientation, religious belief, ethnic origin, citizenship, or political philosophy. Decisions are based on the significance, originality, and clarity of the article, as well as the validity of the study and its relevance to the journal’s scope. Legal requirements, such as those concerning defamation, copyright infringement, and plagiarism, are also considered.

Confidentiality
The editor and any editorial staff member must not disclose any information about a submitted manuscript to anyone other than the corresponding author, reviewers, potential reviewers, other editorial advisors, and the publisher, as appropriate.

Disclosure and Conflicts of Interest
Unpublished materials disclosed in a submitted manuscript must not be used by the editor or editorial board members for their own research without the author's explicit written consent.

Acknowledgment of Sources
Editors should use appropriate software to identify cases where relevant published work cited in the manuscript has not been included in the reference section. The results of this software analysis should indicate if observations or arguments from other publications are properly credited. Editors will notify the author of any substantial similarity or overlap between the manuscript under review and any other published article they are aware of.

Reviewers:

Contribution to Editorial Decisions
Peer review assists the editor and the editorial board in making editorial decisions and helps the author improve the manuscript.

Promptness
Any selected reviewer who feels unqualified to review the research reported in a manuscript or knows that its prompt review will be impossible should notify the editor and withdraw from the review process.

Confidentiality
Manuscripts received for review must be treated as confidential documents. They must not be shown to or discussed with others except as authorized by the editor.

Standards of Objectivity
Reviews should be conducted objectively. Personal criticism of the author is inappropriate. Reviewers should express their views clearly, with supporting arguments.

Acknowledgment of Sources
Reviewers should identify relevant published work that has not been cited by the authors. They should indicate whether observations or arguments from other publications are properly referenced. Reviewers should notify the editor of any substantial similarity or overlap between the manuscript under consideration and any other published paper of which they have personal knowledge.

Disclosure and Conflict of Interest
Privileged information or ideas obtained through peer review must be kept confidential and not used for personal advantage. Reviewers should not consider manuscripts where they have conflicts of interest arising from competitive, collaborative, or other relationships with any authors, companies, or institutions connected to the papers.

Authors:

Standards of Manuscripts
Authors of original research reports should present an accurate account of the work performed and an objective discussion of its significance. Underlying data should be represented accurately in the article. A manuscript should contain sufficient detail and references to permit others to replicate the work. Fraudulent or knowingly inaccurate statements constitute unethical behavior and are unacceptable.

Data Access and Retention
Authors may be asked to provide raw data for editorial review and should be prepared to make the data publicly available if possible. In any case, authors should ensure the accessibility of such data to other competent professionals for at least ten years after publication, provided that confidentiality regarding participants and legal rights to proprietary data can be protected.

Originality, Plagiarism, and Acknowledgment of Sources
Authors should submit only entirely original works and must properly cite the work and/or words of others. Publications that were influential in determining the nature of the reported work should also be cited.

Multiple, Redundant, or Concurrent Publication
In general, manuscripts describing essentially the same research should not be published in more than one journal. Submitting the same manuscript to more than one journal concurrently constitutes unethical publishing behavior and is unacceptable. Additionally, Revista de Enfermagem da UFJF limits each author to submitting up to three manuscripts per publication volume. Authors may only use the same results in other publications if they clearly reference this journal as the original publication source. As an open-access journal, we allow free use of articles in educational and scientific applications, provided that the source is cited in accordance with the CC-BY license of Creative Commons.

Authorship of the Paper
Authorship should be limited to those who have made a significant contribution to the conception, design, execution, or interpretation of the study. All significant contributors should be listed as co-authors. The corresponding author ensures that all contributing co-authors are included and that no non-contributing individuals are listed. The corresponding author must also verify that all co-authors have approved the final version of the manuscript and agreed to its submission for publication.

Disclosure and Conflicts of Interest
All authors must include a statement disclosing any financial or other conflicts of interest that could be interpreted as influencing the results or their interpretation in the manuscript. All financial support for the project must be disclosed.

Fundamental Errors in Published Works
When an author discovers a significant error or inaccuracy in their published work, it is the author's obligation to promptly notify the journal's editor and cooperate with the editor to retract or correct the paper in the form of an erratum.

Errata should be communicated via email (revista.enfufjf@ufjf.edu.br) to the Editor-in-Chief within a maximum of 30 days after identifying the error. Special attention should be given to proofreading to avoid errata.

Errata may also be published at the end of articles, as per international database guidelines, preserving the original manuscript record while informing readers of necessary corrections. Errata are published at the end of articles in compliance with international database guidelines, preserving the original manuscript and noting the necessary corrections.

A retraction by the authors is appropriate when the errors are significant enough to invalidate the manuscript's results and conclusions.

Example for submitting errata:
In the article <article title> published in <vol>(<no>), on page <error page>, where it read: “<originally published text>", it should read: "<corrected text>".

Editor's Confirmation

In cases of allegations or evidence of scientific misconduct, such as fraudulent publication or plagiarism, the Journal of Nursing of UFJF (Revista de Enfermagem da UFJF), in close collaboration with the Editor-in-Chief, will take all necessary measures to clarify the situation and correct the affected article. These measures may include immediate publication of an erratum or, in more severe cases, complete retraction of the work.

The journal adopts a stance of equality and respect, without discrimination based on age, color, religion, disability, marital status, veteran status, national origin, race, gender, genetic predisposition, or sexual orientation in its publishing processes, services, and activities.

Scientific Misconduct and Violations of Publication Ethics

Scientific misconduct includes practices such as fabrication, falsification, and plagiarism by authors. Violations of publication ethics may include:

  • Lack of transparency regarding financial conflicts of interest;
  • Omission of an author deserving credit or inclusion of an author who did not contribute to the work;
  • Misrepresentation of the publication status of bibliographic references, such as incorrectly stating that an article is "in press";
  • Self-plagiarism without proper attribution;
  • Duplicate or redundant publication, i.e., publishing the same content in more than one journal.

In cases of scientific misconduct or violations of publication ethics, the Revista de Enfermagem da UFJF follows the principles of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). By submitting a manuscript, the author agrees to comply with the journal's ethical guidelines and is aware of the potential consequences of violations. These consequences include notification of the violation, retraction of the article, communication with institutional authorities, and possible suspension of submission rights to the journal.

Redundant or Duplicate Publication

Redundant publication occurs when data, tables, figures, or any other substantially similar content already published is submitted again. When submitting a manuscript to the Revista de Enfermagem da UFJF, the corresponding author must inform the Editor-in-Chief about any prior submission or report that may be considered duplicate. Submitting abstracts to scientific meetings, without extensive dissemination, is not considered prior publication.

Plagiarism

Plagiarism is the unauthorized use of another person's ideas or words without proper attribution. Authors must accurately cite sources and avoid literal reproduction of passages without permission. Third-party materials, such as texts, figures, images, and tables, should only be used with appropriate authorization and attribution, including works previously published by the authors themselves.

The journal uses iThenticate to check for plagiarism in submitted manuscripts, and those with excessive duplication will be rejected.

Consequences for Violations

In cases of scientific misconduct, the journal may take editorial actions such as:

  • Public notification of the violation;
  • Retraction of already published articles;
  • Communication with relevant institutional authorities;
  • Loss of submission rights to the Revista de Enfermagem da UFJF.

Complaints

Authors wishing to submit complaints related to the editorial process should initially contact the Associate Editor. If the issue is not resolved, the complaint may be forwarded to the Editor-in-Chief. The Associate Editor and the Editor-in-Chief are committed to acknowledging the complaint within 7 working days, explaining the procedures that will be adopted to resolve the issue.
