Introduction: The Family and Community Health Strategy (CFHS) is part of the emergency care network (ECN). Although it is a point of the ECN and that the attention to cases of emergency is increasingly present in the daily life of the CFHS, this theme is still little worked out by the literature, which points out the importance of investigating it. Objective: To analyze the role of CFHS services in the care of users in emergency situations. Methodology: a qualitative, exploratory case study developed in the seven CFHS units of a municipality in the midwest of São Paulo, Brazil. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 38 professionals, analyzed according to thematic description. Results: The data were grouped into three thematic nuclei: structure, work process and articulation of CFHS with ECN. The structure was deficient, both in relation to professional training and the availability of equipment, insums, and medicines. The CFHS plays an important role in the care of emergency cases, however, the work process is not organized in order to adequately absorb these cases and the articulation with ECN is deficient. The results point to issues that represent a challenge for the improvement of CFHS in similar contexts.
