Abstract

The main focus of this study is (im)permanence of nurses on the Family Health Strategy (FHS) based on work power and on extrinsical and intrinsical factors which leads to the expansion of this phenomenon. The general goal is to understand, from the town of Ipatinga’s professional nurses’ point of view, the factors which facilitate or difficultate their permanence on FHS. The data gathering was made through interviews recorded with 16 nurses who worked on Ipatinga’s FHS from 2002 to 2007 in order to reveal what lead them to quit the program. The data was analyzed according to three categories, which are: FHS nurse’s profile; factors influencing their work and permanence on FHS; and the distance between prescript work and practical work. The results revealed that nurses have specific education to work on FHS with good expectations about the work proposal when they mentioned that they’ve chosen to act in such area because of identification with the theme axis and the perspective of developing a work focused on the community. The professionals considered as main favorable factors to the job whenever FHS teamwork could be done efficiently by its members, physical infrastructure for a dignifying and private activity and community bonds, seen as a gesture of gratitude and recognition. The main unfavorable factors considered were restricted laboratorial exams access, difficult transportation and inappropriate territorial division. They considered wage and work contract insufficient to keep them on FHS teams along with professional and productivity demands and political-party changes. They reported physical, mental and even social wasting contributing for evasion to other work options with more favorable factors. Thus, nurses elected compatible wages, secure work contracts, better work conditions and permanent education offering as necessary conditions to stimulate their permanence on FHS.
