On the Theory of Ritual Frame Indicating Expressions: a conversation with Juliane House and Daniel Kádár, discussing Goffman’s ideas

Resumo

In March 2021, we met virtually with Juliane House and Dániel Kádár. We asked them first about their recent Ritual Frames Indicating ExpressionsTheory and then about their broader research framework. We also discussed links between their theory and the ideas of the eminent sociologist Erving Goffman. The results of this conversation are what we present here in the form of an interview.

Biografia do Autor

Krícia Barreto, Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia de São Paulo, Campus São Paulo Pirituba

Doutora em Linguística pela Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora (2015), com ênfase na área de Linguagem e Sociedade. Realizou doutorado-sanduíche na University of Huddersfield, na Inglaterra (2013/2014). Mestre em Linguística (2012), especialista em Ensino de Língua Portuguesa (2009) e graduada em Letras (com licenciatura em Línguas Portuguesa e Inglesa e respectivas Literaturas) pela UFJF (2008). Atualmente é professora EBTT do Instituto Federal de São Paulo, campus São Paulo Pirituba, atuando no curso de Licenciatura em Letras Português-Inglês e nos cursos Técnicos Integrados ao Ensino Médio. Foi professora adjunta da Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, atuando no Departamento de Letras da Faculdade de Formação de Professores entre 2016 e 2018.

Carolina Scali Abritta, Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UERJ), Faculdade de Formação de Professores

Possui graduação em Direito (2003) e em Letras (2004), mestrado em Letras pela Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora (2007) e doutorado, nesta mesma área, pela Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (2011). Atualmente é professora adjunta da Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, atuando na graduação e pós-graduação do Departamento de Letras da Faculdade de Formação de Professores. Seus temas de interessa são: 1. fala-em-interação. 2. conflito 3. posicionamento 4. face 5. polidez e impolidez 6. contextos institucionais 7. cidadania 8 práticas de cooperação. Membro do Grupo de Pesquisa "Linguagem e Sociedade" (FFP/UERJ-CNPq).

Dániel Z. Kádár, Dalian University of Foreign Languages, China / Research Institute for Linguistics, Hungary

Dániel Z. Kádár (D.Litt., FHEA, Ph.D.) is Chair Professor and Director of the Center for Pragmatic Research at Dalian University of Foreign Languages, China. He is also Research Professor and Head of Research Centre at the Research Institute for Linguistics, Hungary. He is author of 25 books and edited volumes, published with publishing houses of international standing such as Cambridge University Press. He is co-editor of Contrastive Pragmatics: A Cross-Disciplinary Journal. His research interests include the pragmatics of ritual, linguistic (im)politeness research, language aggression, contrastive pragmatics and historical pragmatics.

Juliane House, University of Hamburg, Germany/Dalian University of Foreign Languages, China

Juliane House received her Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics from the University of Toronto and Honorary Doctorates from the Universities of Jyväskylä and Jaume I, Castellon. She is Professor Emerita, Hamburg University, Distinguished University Professor at Hellenic American University, Nashua, NH, USA and Athens, Greece, Honorary Visiting Professor at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Dalian University of Foreign Studies, and Beijing University of Science and Technology. She is co-editor of the Brill journal Contrastive Pragmatics: A Cross-Disciplinary Journal, and Past President of the International Association for Translation and Intercultural Studies. Her research interests include translation, contrastive pragmatics, discourse analysis, politeness research and English as a global language.
