1) Some forensic applicationsof descriptive linguistics

Inglês: In recent years the descriptive linguist has been invited more and more frequently to give evidence in court in cases where the authorship of texts is in dispute. This paper describes some of the tools and techniques used by the linguist and illustrates with real data drawn from English cases, most of them ones in which the author himself participated. The paper ends with a discussion of linguistic approaches to the detection of plagiarism.

Tradução: Nos últimos anos, a Lingüística Descritiva tem sido cada vez mais convocada em tribunais para fornecer subsídios em casos em que a autoria de textos está em disputa. Este artigo descreve algumas das ferramentas e técnicas usadas pelo lingüista, ilustrando-as com casos reais em língua inglesa, na maioria dos quais o autor do artigo esteve envolvido na qualidade de perito real. O artigo finaliza com uma discussão a respeito de abordagens lingüísticas para a detecção do plágio.
