Considerations on dreams in Umbanda from the perspective of Jungian psychology

Abstract

This study seeks to establish a critical approach and dialogue between Jungian psychology and Umbanda, a Brazilian Afro-indigenous religion, based on the considerations of these two different fields on dreams. Through qualitative research, which involved conversational dynamics with an Umbanda priest and the analysis of excerpts from a book written by him, we addressed topics such as the meanings, importance, uses and benefits of dreams, as well as their relationship with religious experience and self-realization (Self). The research indicated that, although there are significant differences between their practices and theoretical foundations, there are several points of convergence between Umbanda and the psychology of Carl Gustav Jung. Both approaches recognize dreams as means of guidance, transformation and connection with deeper dimensions of being. These initial findings suggest the relevance of a deeper and more complex study of this field, expanding the dialogue between psychology and spirituality, especially in Brazilian cultural contexts.
