Elderly age and the transformations of sexuality in Postmodernity:
a hermeneutic study of religion on identity and body.

Population aging in the 21st century brings significant challenges to social structures, requiring a revision of the conceptions and social representations of old ages. This study, a critical literature review, explores how sexuality in elderly age is transformed in postmodernity, utilizing a hermeneutic approach to religion concerning identity and the body. Historically, elderly age has been associated with stigmas and negative stereotypes, negatively influencing the self-image and well-being of the elderly. The perception of the aging body, especially among women, is affected by aesthetic norms that privilege youth. Spirituality, understood beyond formal religious practice, plays a fundamental role in reconstructing identity in elderly age. The hermeneutics of religion offers a perspective to interpret religious narratives about the body and desire, and how these influence the experience of sexuality in elderly age. This study proposes that a hermeneutic approach can contribute to combating ageism and deconstructing negative stereotypes, promoting a more inclusive view of sexuality in elderly age.
