Resumo

Zósimo de Panópolis (sécs. III-IV d.C.) foi um sacerdote-artesão egípcio cuja obra teve imensa importância para a alquimia antiga. Escrevendo em grego durante um período em que o Egito romanizado passava por uma queda de prestígio e incentivo das atividades nos templos, Zósimo discorre sobre práticas metalúrgicas lançando mão de todo um cabedal religioso e teórico, por vezes em simples receitas, por vezes em tratados e cartas (dirigidas principalmente a certa Teosebeia). O famoso Sobre a letra ômega, por exemplo, possui forte caráter sincrético; por meio dessa obra, Zósimo aponta diversos paralelos entre as tradições grega, egípcia e hebraica, reforçando a necessidade de uma abordagem espiritual à arte metalúrgica. Examino neste artigo alguns pontos principais de seus escritos a fim de apresentar Zósimo ao público interessado.
