Abstract

This article’s general goal is to study the creationism-evolutionism’s controversy within the public debates between the fundamentalist and liberal currents in the protestant churches of the United States, in the first decades of the 20th century. We understand that this controversy occurred between a literalist interpretation of the Bible, that defended the creationism as literally presented in the Bible texts, and another conception called “liberal” or “modernist”, that accepted the principles of the Higher Criticism, and sought to adjust the interpretation of the Scriptures to the thesis proposed by the modern science, including the Darwinist evolutionism.
