Abstract

Aim: To evaluate the effect of periodontal therapy on the capillary glycemia levels in diabetic patients presented
chronic periodontitis. Methods: Fifteen diabetic subjects that presented chronic periodontitis (n = 15) were
subjected to procedures of non-surgical periodontal therapy. The values of capillary glycemia were measured at the
beginning and the end of dental treatment. Results: The correlation between the mean capillary glycemia before and
after therapy peridontal of all patients (n = 15) was not significant. However, when examined only patients with
high levels of capillary glycemia (> 250 mg / dl) was found effective in reducing glycemic levels after treatment (p
<0.001). Conclusions: The periodontal therapy in subjects with chronic periodontitis is an important therapeutic
tool to improve the glycemic control in subjects that with high glycemic levels.
