Manga is an original form of comic book originated in Japan and two of its most important demographics are the shoujo and the shounen. Shoujo is mainly aimed at a teenage female audience, while shounen is aimed at teenage boys. The manga industry has sought to respond to social changes and reader demands by becoming more diverse in terms of themes, which results in greater volume and depth in the female characters. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze the main female characters in a shoujo and a shounen work of great contemporary prestige in the West - according to the MyAnimeList database, which is widely used by the Western population - in order to verify the degree of female representation centered on them. Haruhi Fujioka, the protagonist of the shoujo Ouran High School Host Club, and Shinobu Kocho, from the shounen Demon Slayer, were selected as the most representative of both demographics. Both were subjected to 15 gender representativeness tests that dialog with the works: Bechdel (1985), Ellie Willis (2011), Finkbeiner (2013), Mako Mori (2013), Sexy Lamp (2013), Tauriel (2014), Maisy (2015), CM (2016), The Crystal Gems (2016), Ko (2017), Landau (2017), Villarreal (2017), Design Diversity (2020), Sloan (2020) and Young (2020). Based on the parameters of these tests, we observed that both characters were approved in all of them. However, it was also noticeable that some of the tests have weaknesses arising from low requirements or shallow parameters, not considering female representativeness itself or their depth as a character, but their mere presence in a narrative. Thus, it was concluded that it is necessary to rethink the evolution of genders, as well as their applicability to traditional nomenclatures and the tests created to assess gender representativeness.
