Abstract

This article discusses the presence of skating in the Rio de Janeiro city between 1872 and 1892, a moment when grew up public amusements and they were underway significant social and policies changes. This was a practice that, in the international context, was symbolically related to modernity. In the Court society, skating was an indicator of the circulation of progress and civilization ideas.
