Resumen

This paper deals with the performance of Mendes Pimentel (1869-1957), who, at the beginning of the Republic, was involved in controversy in the state’s public scene by means of the newspaper A Folha, Diário de Minas and Jornal do Povo. Understanding the media as an effective agent in the political process, we analyzed the political movement of newspapers, motivations and forms of debate and existing consensus and disagreements around the crucial issues of the state and the country.
