Landscape in Art - elements for a history and questions for future research

Resumen

This article aims at contributing to a deeper knowledge and to a discussion on landscape
art in Brazil an artistic genre which appeared in the country in the end of the 19th Century. An attempt is made to understand the broader cultural environment in which landscape emerges and develops as an artistic genre in itself, trying to identify significant landmarks that might help the delimitation of its terms of study and allow for comparison to Brazil's own experience in this field. Limits and possibilities of Brazilian landscape art are discussed in the end.
