Abstract

This article analyzes the tense relationship established between police and urban workers in São Paulo, in the turn of the XIX to the XX century. In a city marked by a then recent and accelerated industrialization, by constant town planning mutations, and, above all, by a enormous demographic expansion, due to different migratory flows, the police appeared as the more usual speaker between the growing poor population and the State.
